Been out of commission

Greetings Anyone!

Been somewhat out of commission here due to a number of factors.

Latest – aside from any holiday frippery – has been the conversion to the new computer. Still trying to make friends and get to the point where we’re both playing nice, but not quite there yet.

Hoping the spangly new set-up will allow for easier access to photos and even a word processing package (which seems to be a dream at this point)

I do have faith that there is light at the end of that tunnel and that it’s not the light of the oncoming train.

Hope to be back in business at least by the new year.

All the bestest!

That Kid was always gonna cause trouble …

Not long returned from our trip to Venice and I keep thinking about Christian iconography.

Venice was all right, but not really my kind of place. For one thing, Jesus was everywhere. JP reminds me that that’s sort of the point of the faith, but still ….

On the buildings, the sides of walls, in the artwork, as a baby, as a man, being tortured on a cross. [Photos at a later date.]

The thing that struck me was not only how many representations there were, but also how glum they always look.

Jesus on the cross is understandable. Not a light-hearted time.

A major point of the faith, though, is the humanity of Jesus.

If he started his serious preaching at the age of 30, there must have been some camaraderie and a few laughs along the way somewhere.

Where is Jokey Jesus?

And why does Mary look so consistently bummed out? All of those “Madonna and Child” paintings are, without fail, glum.

She knows this kid is gonna be something special, she’s had angels approaching her and reassuring Joseph of the veracity of her story. This is meant to be an amazing kid. Amazing times are ahead.

Where’s the gurgling, babbling, silly-faced infant? Add a few halos if the more day-to-day stuff  seems too mundane. (The closest we seemed to get was a breastfeeding Jesus. That was unexpected.)

All Mary’s expression said to me repeatedly was, “I’m tired already and this kid is gonna be a lotta grief. I just know it.”

Any Christian artists out there interested in reforming the iconography?

Next rant: Ugly Jesus.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving folks!!

This is absolutely my most favourite holiday and yet again not able to celebrate it in a style to which I’d like to become accustomed.

Me, I’m thankful for more stuff than you could ever imagine.

Friends, health, senses (the average 5, common and humour included), the divine …

Thankful for my ukes and being able to bash away at them, warbling into the ether.

Recently had an unexpected visit from some folk. They dealt with the state of the house and the state of me, offering good chat and admirable ukulele “stylings”.

Monday night we had the chance to learn “Teenage Kicks” at the Ukearist gathering. Thanks G!

So much more to be thankful for, but preparing for yet another trip …

More on that in future….

Nothing a few good ukes won’t sort!

Magnificent day of singing and strumming and then some more strumming and singing.

There’s nothing like a few good ukuleles and a few good folk to uke around with!

Here’s a question: “I Only Want To Be With You” (made famous by – among others – Dusty Springfield).

Opinion was divided:

Slow and wistful (and full of longing for someone to realise you are The One)

or

Fast and bouncy (and full of excitement at realising that you’ve met The One)?

Both work, but I opt for one more than the other.

Wondering about other folk ….

It’s all in the rhythm …

Hoping to get back into some rhythm of posting snippets hereabouts.

Apart from thinking I’m a bit rhythmically challenged generally, my hope is to find a suitable one for writing.

Haven’t been near computer much because we’ve recently bought a new one and JP is trying to encourage the old one and the new one to “play nice” and do a bit of sharing.

I’m sure that he has it well in hand, but there has been a fair amount of murmuring and forehead stroking.

We’ll get there fairly soon, but at the moment, computer use is a bit sketchy. Hope to be fired up and inspired up very soon …..

Remembrance – 20/20 hindsight?

Been conflicted about commenting on Rembrance Day.

Wanted to mark the date, but the glorification of war really annoys me and I’m afraid that is what it all seems to me to be.

Harry Patch

Old veterans are usually rolled out by the media to support current military campaigns. They have done the same with one of the last of Britain’s World War 1 soldiers, Harry Patch.

I am thankful that at the time of his death, portions of the media briefly reported some of the quotes this World War I veteran had made.

“War is organised murder,” he insisted, “and nothing else.” He said that, for him, 11 November was “just showbusiness”.

“politicians who took us to war should have been given the guns and told to settle their differences themselves, instead of organising nothing better than legalised mass murder”.

“at the end, the peace was settled round a table, so why the hell couldn’t they do that at the start without losing millions of men?”

These lines were quickly buried beneath pro-war and pro-status quo statements by Prince Charles and Gordon Brown, amongst others – ignoring the fundamental message Mr Patch strove to express.

That Mr Patch waited until he was 100 years old to speak out also interests me.

St Lurgy blesses us

St Lurgy has laid a blessing on our household.

JP – as in many areas – has been “the chosen one” whereas I’ve only been glanced at.

Domesticity is not my great area of achievement, but I’ve been trying to provide the odd meal and cup of warm liquid.

Perhaps my unholy alliance with the evil echinacea or the dues I’ve paid as a survivor of Catholic school have unhinged my own miracle.

Basically, life around the shack has been much more horizontal than usual, with venturing out on a need-to-go basis.

Victoria Vox needs our help!

Victoria Vox is an accomplished uke player/singer/songwriter.

Perhaps you have been lucky enough to be at one of Victoria’s gigs at a ukulele festival or a small pub like The Village in Leith.

The Leith gig was one of my top 3 gigs ever (and the first 2 are joint David Byrne gigs).

Check out her website: http://www.victoriavox.com/

Victoria is currently trying to raise funds for her next CD and is asking for help from the masses.

If you want to nurture a ukulele talent, have a bit of spare cash which needs a cause or just want to be immortalised in CD history, consider supporting Ms Vox in her latest endeavours.

Check out http://www.victoriavox.com/newalbum/ for the list of benefits you will reap in return for your donation *.

If any of you opt for the house concert and need any guests that particular day/evening, please feel free to let us know!!

*in addition to providing support to a worthy recipient

Sesame Street

Sesame Street is 40.

How can they show tons of US television shows in the UK but not Sesame Street???

Please can we have a PBS UK just like they have BBC USA (if that’s what it’s called) in the US?

Please? I’ll be reeeelly good. Promise.

I know my favourite muppet is Fozzie, but there’s room for lots more pals.

If you get the chance to see “A Muppet Family Christmas”, it’s great (NOT to be confused with “a very merry muppet christmas”) and out of print in the UK. Mistake.

(Even JP laughed like a fool after relenting …)

“Muppet Christmas Carol” is also among their finest works.
